Shaft play is measured in two directions and both matter. Radial play is the side-to-side movement of the compressor wheel; end float is movement along the shaft axis. Measure both with a dial indicator with the engine cold and the housing steady. Limits vary by frame size and are commonly quoted in the region of a tenth of a millimeter, so always use the unit's own specification. Play over the limit, any wheel-to-housing contact, or oil in the housing condemns the unit. Play within the limit with boost below specification points at the air side or the control, not at the bearings.
What you will notice
| Symptom | What it usually points to |
|---|---|
| Whistle that has changed pitch | A blade touching the housing or a damaged wheel changes the note. Stop and inspect. |
| Blue smoke and rising oil consumption | Oil is passing the rings or the turbocharger seals. Determine which before ordering anything. |
| Oil in the compressor or turbine housing | Check the drain and the crankcase pressure before blaming the seals. |
| Boost low with the intake intact | Play alone rarely explains low boost. Test boost pressure before removing the unit. |
Most likely causes
| Cause | How to confirm it |
|---|---|
| Worn journal bearings | Radial play above specification with the wheels still intact. Measure before condemning the unit. |
| Thrust bearing wear | End float above specification, usually after oil starvation or sustained high crankcase pressure. |
| Oil coking from shutdown under load | Carbon in the bearing housing restricts oil feed and starts the wear. Inspect the feed line and the drain. |
| Crankcase pressure pushing oil back | High blow-by pressurizes the drain and pushes oil past the seals. Test it before replacing the turbocharger. |
What each measurement tells you
| Measurement | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Radial play | Side-to-side movement of the wheel. Use the unit's own limit, commonly a fraction of a millimeter. |
| End float | Axial movement along the shaft. Small allowances only, and a worn thrust bearing shows here first. |
| Wheel-to-housing contact | Any polishing or scoring condemns the unit whatever the dial indicator says. |
| Oil drain condition | Sludge or carbon in the drain restricts oil return and pushes oil past the seals. |
| Crankcase pressure at the breather | High pressure explains oil loss with no turbocharger fault at all. |
How to confirm it
- Cool the engine, then remove the intake hose
Work on a cold engine. Remove the hose or the air cleaner outlet so the compressor wheel is fully visible, and check for oil and for dust passing the filter at the same time.
- Inspect the wheel and the housing for contact
Turn the wheel slowly by hand and look for polishing, scoring or a bright ring where a blade has touched the housing. Any contact condemns the unit, whatever the next measurement shows.
- Measure radial play with a dial indicator
Mount the indicator so the probe touches the wheel nut or the shaft end, then lift the wheel firmly in each direction and read the total movement. Hold the housing steady so the reading is shaft play rather than housing movement, and take it in two planes.
- Measure end float on the shaft axis
Set the probe on the axis and push and pull the wheel along it. Compare both numbers with the unit's own specification, which is commonly quoted in a tenth of a millimeter. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. keeps the specification for each frame size on file, so the two readings are judged against the right limit rather than a general rule of thumb.
- Check the oil feed, the drain and the crankcase pressure
A perfect bearing with a restricted drain still leaks oil. Inspect the feed line for coking, confirm the drain runs freely, and measure crankcase pressure at the breather. If that pressure is high, correct it first.
- Decide, and record both numbers
Write the radial and axial figures into the machine history with the engine hours and the last oil sample result. Two numbers recorded now become the baseline that shows whether play is growing. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. asks for those figures with every turbocharger inquiry, because they separate a worn unit from an oil supply fault.
What to do about it
Contact or play over the limit: exchange the unit, and recheck the oil feed and the crankcase breather before starting the replacement, or it will fail the same way.
Oil in the housing with play within the limit: correct the drain, the breather and the crankcase pressure. The seals are usually a symptom rather than the cause.
Coked feed line or restricted drain: replace the line or clean the housing and confirm free return flow before assembly.
Record an oil sample at the same time. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. supplies genuine, OEM-quality and remanufactured turbochargers and repair kits from Guangzhou, holds 3,000+ part types on the shelf with 100,000+ part numbers available to order, and declares the grade on every quotation line. The five brands for which the company holds authorized dealer status are Garrett, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, TONGMYUNG, NIKURA and Marusan, and the Mitsubishi authorization covers MHI engine parts only. Kobelco is not among them, and Kobelco parts are supplied through original channels or as quality alternatives.

How much shaft play is acceptable?
It depends on the frame size and is commonly quoted in a tenth of a millimeter. There is no single number that fits every unit, so measure both directions and read them against the turbocharger's own specification.
Can I check play with the engine running?
No. Measuring play is a cold, engine-off job with the intake hose removed. Boost testing is the running test, and the two answer different questions.
Oil is in the compressor housing. Does that mean the turbocharger is finished?
Not necessarily. A restricted drain or high crankcase pressure can push oil past sound seals. Measure play and crankcase pressure before condemning the unit.
