A rising level on the dipstick is the one oil fault that gets worse if it is ignored. Most of the time the extra volume is diesel that has passed an injector nozzle or a pump seal and washed down the cylinder walls. Fuel thins the oil, lowers its film strength, and above roughly 5 percent by volume it starts to cost bearings and turbocharger journals. Confirm it in four cheap steps: read the level the same way twice, smell and rub the oil, send a sample for viscosity and flash point, and measure injector leak-off on a hot engine. A flash point well below specification is the cleanest single proof.
What you will notice
| Symptom | What it usually points to |
|---|---|
| Oil level climbs above the full mark between services | Extra volume appeared from somewhere. Only fuel or coolant can add it. |
| Oil feels thin, dark and smells of diesel | Fuel is present. Viscosity and flash point say how much and how bad. |
| Oil pressure sags once the engine is hot | Thinned oil escapes past the bearings faster, so the gauge drops before wear begins. |
| Hard cold starting with pale smoke | Fuel that should have burned is leaving the exhaust and reaching the sump. |
Most likely causes
| Cause | How to confirm it |
|---|---|
| Injector nozzle or needle seat leaking | Leak-off volume on the suspect cylinder runs above the limit. Compare every cylinder hot. |
| Injection pump shaft seal or feed pump seal | Fuel reaches the timing case and then the sump. A diesel smell in the timing housing confirms it. |
| Heavy post-injection during regeneration | Aftertreatment regeneration injects fuel late in the cycle. Interrupted regenerations make it worse. |
| Short duty cycles that never warm up | Cold running leaves fuel on the cylinder walls. Check the duty cycle before ordering parts. |
Four checks that prove or clear fuel dilution
| Check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Dipstick level, read properly | Machine level, engine off, five minutes to settle. Compare with your own last reading, not the mark alone. |
| Viscosity at 40 degrees Celsius | A drop of one ISO grade or more from the fill oil means something thin has been added. |
| Flash point | The cleanest proof. Fuel lowers flash point sharply, and no other common contaminant does it the same way. |
| Injector leak-off, each cylinder | One cylinder far above the rest points at the source, and the test repeats well on a hot engine. |
| Coolant contamination by analysis | Rules out the other reason a level rises. Glycol appears in the same sample. |
How to confirm it
- Read the level the same way every time
Machine level, engine off, five minutes for oil to drain back, then read. Compare against your own record rather than the mark. A level that moved twenty millimeters in two hundred hours is a trend, and trends are what tell you when to act.
- Smell and rub the oil between your fingers
Diesel has an unmistakable smell, and diluted oil feels thin and loses its tackiness. A dipstick sample on a rag takes ten seconds and decides whether a laboratory test is worth ordering.
- Send a sample for viscosity and flash point
Take it hot from the middle of the drain stream, not from the first or last of the flow. Viscosity and flash point together confirm dilution, and the same report rules out glycol.
- Measure injector leak-off on a hot engine
Route the leak-off lines into graduated containers, run at the specified speed for the specified time, and compare each cylinder and the total against the limit. Do it hot: an injector that passes cold can fail hot, which is why the fault appears only after a long shift.
- Check engine hours against duty cycle
Look at whether the machine idles for hours between loads or runs shifts too short to reach operating temperature. If it does, the dilution may be a schedule problem rather than a component failure, and Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. would rather see the duty cycle fixed than a set of bearings ordered.
What to do about it
Injector fault: exchange the unit and re-measure the whole set. A nozzle that leaks into a cylinder rarely travels alone, and the leak-off figures on the other cylinders decide whether one injector or a set is needed. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. quotes injectors by grade, so a set can be priced as a set rather than one unit at a time.
Pump or feed pump seal: replace the seal and inspect the feed pump at the same time. Fuel in the timing case is cheap to correct before it reaches the sump.
Duty cycle: raise working temperature, cut long idling, and shorten the drain interval until the level is stable. Fresh oil costs far less than a bearing set.
Change the oil and filter once the source is fixed, and record the new level. Diluted oil cannot be restored. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. supplies genuine, OEM-quality and remanufactured fuel system parts from Guangzhou, holds 3,000+ part types on the shelf with 100,000+ part numbers available to order, and declares the grade on every quotation line. The five brands for which the company holds authorized dealer status are Garrett, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, TONGMYUNG, NIKURA and Marusan, and the Mitsubishi authorization covers MHI engine parts only. Kobelco is not among them, and Kobelco parts are supplied through original channels or as quality alternatives.

How much diesel in the oil is too much?
Above about 5 percent by volume the oil has lost enough film strength to endanger bearings and turbocharger journals. Anything above 2 percent is worth investigating and monitoring at every service.
Can I just change the oil more often and keep running?
You can, and some operators do, but the fuel is still entering the crankcase. A shorter interval buys time while you find the source; it does not remove it.
Does fuel dilution always mean new injectors?
No. A pump seal, a feed pump, long idling or interrupted regeneration can all raise the level. That is why leak-off measurement comes before any parts order.
