Swing circle greasing intervals

The swing circle is one of the most expensive bearings on the machine and one of the easiest to grease. It is also the item most often left off a service sheet.

Short answer

The swing circle is greased through one or more fittings on the upper structure at every service, typically every 250 hours or per the machine's lubrication chart, with the upper structure rotated as you grease so the whole race receives grease. Quantity matters less than distribution: a few pumps at one position greases one sector and leaves the rest dry. Rotate the structure as you grease and stop when fresh grease appears evenly at the seal.

What you will notice

SymptomWhat it usually points to
Fresh grease appearing at the seal in one sector onlyThe race is being greased at one position. Rotate the upper structure while greasing so the whole circle receives it.
A rumble or grinding sound when swingingUnder-lubricated or already worn bearing surfaces. Grease first, then measure clearance if the noise remains.
Swing jerky at low speedUneven lubrication, or hardened grease and debris packed into part of the race.
A grease fitting that will not take greaseA blocked or damaged passage. Clear it before forcing grease, or the grease goes past the seal instead of into the race.
Water or grit at the swing circle sealThe lip seal is damaged, or the circle is not being greased often enough to purge contamination.

Most likely causes

CauseHow to confirm it
Greasing one point of the circle onlyGrease enters at one position and does not travel around the race. The fix is method, not quantity: rotate the upper structure as you grease.
Interval too long for the working conditionsDust, water and long shifts deplete grease faster than the hours suggest. Shorten the interval rather than increasing the quantity at each visit.
Wrong grease gradeA grease that will not hold its base oil at working temperature runs out of the bearing. Use the grade specified for the swing circle.
Blocked grease passageDebris or hardened grease plugs the gallery, so the fitting refuses grease and the race stays dry while the operator believes it is done.
Damaged swing circle sealA failed seal lets water and grit in and grease out. It is a small part protecting one of the most expensive assemblies on the machine.

What the greasing interval depends on

ConditionWhat to change
Standard earthmoving on dry groundFollow the lubrication chart for the model, normally at the 250-hour service.
Dust, sand or demolition debrisHalve the interval. Abrasive dust consumes grease faster than hours do.
Water, mud or frequent washingShorten the interval and inspect the seal at every service, because water displaces grease.
Continuous swinging dutyShorten the interval and confirm grease purges evenly all the way around the circle.
Machine standing for long periodsGrease before storage and again before the machine returns to work, so the contact points are not left dry and exposed.

How to confirm it

  1. Read the lubrication chart for the model

It gives the number of swing circle points, the grease grade and the interval. The chart is the authority for that machine; general advice from another model is not.

  2. Park where the whole circle can be reached safely

Level ground, bucket down, engine off, and enough clear space to rotate the upper structure through a full turn. Nobody inside the swing radius while the structure is rotated, at any time.

  3. Clean each fitting before connecting the grease gun

Wipe the fitting first. Greasing a dirty fitting pushes grit into the race, which is worse than skipping the service altogether on a dusty site.

  4. Grease in stages while rotating the upper structure

Add a small quantity, rotate the structure a quarter turn, and repeat until you have been around the full circle. This is the step that actually gets grease to every sector, and it is the one most often skipped when the service is done in a hurry.

  5. Watch for grease purging evenly at the seal

Fresh grease appearing evenly at the lip seal shows the race is full and the seal is doing its job. Purge in one place only, or none at all, both mean the grease is not reaching the bearing.

  6. Record the quantity, the grade and any fitting that refused grease

A fitting that will not take grease is a fault to fix rather than a note to forget, and the record shows whether the interval is right for the conditions. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. treats the swing circle as one of the items worth recording on every service sheet, because the bearing costs many times the grease, and it asks for the quantity used as well, since a machine that suddenly needs much more than usual is telling you something about its seal.

What to do about it

Fitting will not take grease: clear or replace the fitting and the passage. Forcing grease past a blocked passage pressurizes the seal and does nothing for the race behind it.

Seal damaged or missing: replace it at the next greasing rather than at the next failure. A swing circle seal is a low-cost part that keeps water and grit out of a high-cost assembly.

Grease purging in one sector only: change the method before changing the interval, because the grease is going in and just not going around.

Noise or play that persists after correct greasing: measure swing bearing clearance and compare with the limit. Lubrication cannot undo wear, but it is what prevents it.

Frequently asked

How often should I grease the swing circle?

Normally at every 250-hour service, but dusty, wet or high-swing-duty work justifies a shorter interval. Follow the lubrication chart for the model and shorten the interval rather than adding more grease at each visit.

How much grease does a swing circle take?

Enough to see fresh grease purging evenly at the seal, added in stages while the upper structure rotates. The exact quantity matters less than getting grease all the way around the race.

What happens if the swing circle is never greased?

Wear accelerates sharply, water and grit enter the race, and the bearing, the seal and the swing pinion all reach their limits sooner. The bearing is among the most expensive components on the machine, which is why the cheapest maintenance item protects it.
