Greasing schedule and the points that matter

Greasing is the cheapest maintenance on the machine and the one most often done badly. The reason is straightforward: a grease fitting that accepts grease looks identical to one that is blocked.

Short answer

Follow the machine's greasing chart and interval, but understand what each point protects. Watch for grease emerging at the joint rather than assuming that because the gun moved, the grease arrived. Pay particular attention to the points that are awkward to reach, because those are the ones that get skipped.

Where the grease goes, and what it protects

GroupWhat it protects
Boom and arm pivot pinsVisible wear and the classic source of play in the front end. Should take grease and show it emerging at the joint.
Bucket linkage and cylinder pinsHigh-load, high-cycle points. Play here changes bucket geometry and increases impact loading.
Swing circle and swing bearingRequires the specified grease applied at the correct points, not general-purpose grease applied anywhere convenient.
Swing gearbox and swing pinionSome designs require separate greasing of the pinion and gear teeth; check the chart rather than assuming.
Track adjuster grease cylindersNot a lubrication point. Over-greasing these can damage the seal or release the relief valve.
Track frame and recoil spring areaAlignment and freedom of movement. Often omitted entirely.
Coupler and attachment pointsSafety-relevant on machines with quick couplers. Follow the coupler manufacturer's interval rather than the machine's.
Blade or outrigger pivots where fittedFrequent loading and easy to forget on dozer-blade equipped machines.

How to confirm it

  1. Understand the interval and why it exists

The greasing interval protects pins and bushings from metal-to-metal contact. Missed intervals do not cause an immediate failure; they cause gradual clearance growth that eventually manifests as a cracked boss or lug, which costs far more than the grease.

  2. Clean the fitting before connecting the gun

Grit around the fitting is pushed into the joint by the grease. Wiping the fitting takes seconds and is the difference between lubricating a pin and grinding it.

  3. Watch for grease emerging at the joint

This is the only real proof the grease reached the bearing surface. If the gun moves but no grease appears at the joint, the passage is blocked or the seal is venting, and the point is not being lubricated.

  4. Investigate any fitting that will not take grease

A blocked fitting means an unlubricated pin. Clear the passage or replace the fitting rather than moving on — that pin is now on a path to failure and it will be the expensive one.

  5. Do not over-grease the track adjuster

The track adjuster is a hydraulic cylinder, not a lubricated joint. Greasing it sets track tension; over-greasing can damage the seal or release the relief valve. Set tension by measurement.

  6. Use the specified grease type

Machines with high-load pivot points and swing bearings specify particular grease properties, and general-purpose grease may not carry the extreme-pressure additives required. The wrong grease applied diligently is still the wrong grease.

  7. Grease at the end of the shift where possible

Pushing old grease and contaminants out of a warm joint works better than greasing a cold, dirty machine first thing. It also gets the water out of joints that have been working in wet conditions.

What to do about it

A fitting that will not take grease: clear or replace it the same day. The pin behind it is running dry, and this is how a low-cost lapse becomes a high-cost repair.

Grease emerging at a seal rather than the joint: the seal has failed and the joint is not retaining lubricant. Plan a seal replacement rather than continuing to add grease to it.

Visible play in the front end: measure it and inspect the pin and bushing. Clearance that has grown causes impact loading, which is what cracks bosses. Addressing it at the pin-and-bushing stage is a small repair; addressing it after a boss cracks is not.

Swing bearing noise or play: follow the manufacturer's greasing and inspection requirements precisely. Swing bearings are expensive and their failure modes are serious, so they are not a place for improvisation.

Frequently asked

How often should I grease an excavator?

Follow the machine specification, and shorten the interval in wet, dusty or high-usage conditions. The cost of the grease is trivial against the cost of pins, bushings and the fabrication that follows when clearances grow.

What does it mean if a grease fitting will not take grease?

The passage is blocked or the seal is venting, and the joint is not receiving lubricant. Either way it needs attention now. Continuing around the machine and leaving it will produce a failed pin.

Is greasing the track adjuster the same as a lubrication point?

No. The track adjuster uses grease as hydraulic fluid to set track tension. Over-greasing can damage the seal or release the relief valve, and tension should be set by measurement rather than by feel.
