Identify a belt in three measurements: the profile (classical V, narrow V or poly-rib), the top width, and the effective length, which for V-belts is measured on the outside and for poly-rib belts on the back. Match those three and the belt is equivalent; match a worn marking alone and you may order a belt an inch wrong in length. Confirm against the machine model and serial number, because the alternator, fan and air-conditioning arrangement, and therefore belt length, changes between builds of the same model.
The three belt families on excavators
| Family | How to recognize and measure it |
|---|---|
| Classical V-belt (A, B sections) | Single trapezoidal rib. Measure top width and outside length. Older machines and simple fan drives. |
| Narrow V-belt (SPZ, SPA, SPB) | Taller, narrower cross-section than classical. Same top-width measurement, but a classical belt of the same width is not a substitute. |
| Poly-rib (PK, multi-rib) | Flat back with several small V-ribs. Count the ribs and measure the rib pitch; length is the effective (back) length. |
| Cogged / molded notch V-belt | Notches across the underside. Same measurements as its family; runs on smaller pulleys and runs cooler. |
| Banded (joined) belts | Two or more V-belts joined by a tie band. Never split a banded set into single belts. |
What to do about it
Identify the profile from the pulley or the belt: classical, narrow V or poly-rib, and never assume from width alone.
Measure top width and count ribs, then take the length from the specification or a correctly tensioned belt, not from a stretched one.
Confirm against the model and serial number, including the drive arrangement, because air conditioning and alternator options change the belt.
Replace belts in complete sets on multi-belt drives, and check the tensioner and pulleys while the belt is off: a belt fitted to a worn tensioner dies young and takes its warranty argument with it.
Belts are cheap, downtime is not. Guangzhou Shenyue Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. supplies belts, tensioners and pulleys from Guangzhou, quoting each line by grade so a planned replacement costs less than the roadside one it prevents.
Parts you may need, by grade
| Part | Grades commonly quoted |
|---|---|
| V-belt (A, B, SPZ, SPA, SPB) | Genuine; OEM-quality. Match section and effective length exactly. |
| Poly-rib belt (PK) | Genuine; OEM-quality. Match rib count, pitch and effective length. |
| Banded belt set | Genuine; OEM-quality. Replaced as a set only. |
| Belt tensioner | Genuine; OEM-quality. Replace with the belt where it shows play or weak spring load. |
| Pulley and idler | Genuine; OEM-quality. Worn grooves destroy a new belt in weeks. |

Can I measure a belt that has snapped and gone missing pieces?
Not reliably. A snapped belt releases its tension and its length is no longer meaningful, and missing pieces make width questionable. Measure the pulley grooves for the profile and take the length from the specification for the machine model and serial number. A stretched old belt is equally misleading in the other direction.
The new belt is the right number but squeals on startup. Why?
Most often the tensioner or the pulleys, not the belt. A worn tensioner lets the belt slap and slip at the moment of greatest load, and glazed or worn pulley grooves do the same with a perfect belt. Check tension and groove wear before condemning the belt, and re-check tension after the first run, because new belts seat in.
Does belt length marking mean inside or outside length?
It depends on the family, and this is the classic ordering trap. Classical and narrow V-belts are usually marked by outside length; poly-rib belts by effective length measured at the back. The same nominal figure can mean belts a few millimeters apart depending on the standard, so confirm the marking convention and, where possible, the fitted length before ordering.
