A radiator and a charge air cooler are identified by the same short list of features: core width, height and thickness measured between the tanks, the number of rows and the fin pitch, the bore and angle of every connection, the tank material and how it is fixed to the core, the position of the mounting pins, and any cooler stacked with it such as a hydraulic oil cooler or an integrated transmission cooler. Two machines of the same model can carry different coolers across a build number break, and a cooler from the other build will bolt into place, connect to nothing correctly and cool badly. Measuring takes ten minutes and removes the guesswork that a photograph cannot.
What you will notice
| Symptom | What it usually points to |
|---|---|
| A replacement cooler fits the brackets but the hoses will not line up | The connection layout belongs to a different build. Adapters make it fit and restrict the flow. |
| The machine runs hotter after a new radiator | Core thickness, row count or fin pitch is different from the original, so the same frontal area rejects less heat. |
| The cap will not hold pressure on the new unit | A filler neck with a different seat depth or rating. The cap releases early and the coolant boils at a lower temperature. |
| A charge air cooler that weeps at the tank crimp after a season | A plastic tank on a core designed for a metal tank, or a mounting that lets the cooler flex against its brackets. |
| The oil cooler will not separate from the radiator | The two are a matched stack on that build and are supplied as one assembly. |
Most likely causes
| Cause | How to confirm it |
|---|---|
| Build number break inside one model designation | The same machine name was built with more than one cooling package. The serial number decides which, not the model plate alone. |
| Plastic tank versus metal tank core | Crimp-fitted plastic tanks and brazed metal tanks are not interchangeable, and the mounting loads they tolerate are different. |
| Different row count or fin pitch for the same outline | A core of the same width and height can hold more or fewer rows. The outline matches and the cooling does not. |
| Integrated oil cooler or transmission cooler | A cooler with an internal circuit cannot be replaced by a plain one, and the circuits are not always visible from outside. |
| Inlet and outlet angle differences | A connection of the same bore but a different angle forces the hose into a bend that kinks under load. |
What each feature decides
| Feature | What it decides |
|---|---|
| Core width, height and thickness | Heat rejection and whether the fan shroud and the mounting frame will accept it. |
| Row count and fin pitch | Capacity within the same outline. The most common cause of a hot machine after a swap. |
| Connection bore, type and angle | Whether the original hoses fit without adapters or kinks. Decides the part number on its own. |
| Tank material and fixing method | Pressure rating, flex tolerance and whether a repair is possible at all. |
| Serial and build number | Which of the variants the machine was built with. Always the final check. |
How to confirm it
- Clean the unit and photograph it with a scale
A photograph is for the record, not for identification. Put a tape or a rule in the frame so the proportions are readable, and photograph both faces and every connection.
- Measure the core between the tanks, not the assembly
Width, height and thickness of the finned core only. Overall dimensions include the tanks and the brackets and will not match the specification, which is always quoted on the core.
- Count rows and measure fin pitch
Count the rows at the side plate and measure the fin pitch or count fins over a fixed distance. Two coolers with identical outlines and different row counts are different part numbers with different capacity.
- Record every connection: bore, type and angle
Hose bore, connection type and the angle it leaves the tank at, for each port. Note which side each port is on and whether it is at the top, middle or bottom of the tank.
- Note tank material, fixing method and integrated circuits
Plastic crimped, or metal brazed. Whether the tanks carry an internal oil or transmission circuit, and whether another cooler is stacked and bolted to it.
- Cross-check against the serial number and the parts figure
Take the serial number and the build number to the catalog, find the figure and group for the cooling package, and confirm the item number against the measurements. Where a break exists, the serial number decides, and the measurement confirms which side of it the machine sits on.

Parts you may need, by grade
| Part | Grades commonly quoted |
|---|---|
| Radiator assembly | Genuine or OEM-quality with the matching row count and tank material. State the core dimensions and the serial number with the order. |
| Charge air cooler | Genuine or OEM-quality with the original connection layout. A cooler with the wrong port angle will fit and will kink its hose. |
| Caps, mounts and shroud seals | Genuine or OEM-quality to the stated pressure rating. A cap of the wrong rating undoes the work of the whole assembly. |
Need the parts this covers?
Send the machine model, serial number and the part numbers you need. We confirm fitment before payment and state the grade of every line — genuine, OEM-quality or aftermarket.

Can I use a photograph to identify a radiator?
Only to confirm what you have already measured. Photographs show shape, and shape is the one thing that stays the same across variants. Core thickness, row count, connection angles and internal circuits are what differ, and none of them read from a picture.
Why does the same machine model list two radiators?
Because the cooling package changed during production, usually with an engine or an emission update. The serial number break decides which one the machine was built with, and the measurements confirm it. Ordering by model name alone is how a machine ends up with a cooler that fits and does not cool.
Is a metal tank better than a plastic tank?
Not in itself. Each is designed for a particular core, mounting and pressure, and replacing one type with the other changes the loads the assembly was built to take. Match the original type unless the manufacturer publishes a conversion.
